Exclamation java problems

I had java runtime environment (jre) on my pc and found out it was damaged. So, I uninstalled it and went to java/sun micro site to download a new version and at download page I get message "unable to download due to
unknown reasons". Do I really need jre? and if so, how do I get it? thanks....

Java is so you can run Java applets on the internet. If you don't ever run Java programs, then you don't need it.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Make sure you go to the " J2SE v 1.4.2_05 JRE" link, accept the license agreement and download the "windows installation".
