Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Customer Preview Program.

64 bit server operating systems have been available for quite some time already.

Longhorn will be out in 2006, Microsoft promises. Of course, this really doesn't mean anything.

In perspective, compare a "Microsoft Minute" to a "Microsoft Year"...not too far apart. If you're wondering what type of hardware you should be getting, by 2006, chances are if you build now, you'd be doing some upgrading by then.

also, my bro told me theres a company thats gonna make an open source (maybe just a freeware) OS that's gonna compete with Microsoft, its gonna be compatible with everything Windows is, so if this thing will really come out, and if it'll really work, woah, things are gonna start getting interesting :-P

It's called Linux . The Linux distros are becoming more and more compatible with Windows. I think they will really start becoming popular once gaming on Linux is figured out. I can't wait for the day when I will be able to only use Linux, and not have to bother with Windows. I really love the way Linux works, but it just isn't there yet for me to use all the time.

i really doubt he was talkin about linux, he would've told me if it was linux lol...
u have to know alot of programming langs in order to use it :-P it doesnt have that much of a GUI (im not an expert on it so dont shout if im wrong ;-))
also, i dont mind using windows, cause my dad gets it for free (works at the university, so they get 1 s/n for like the entire university, i think its called corporate edition or something, its win xp pro and im lovin it! :-P) i remember having XP Home on this HP machine and i remember it crashing more often than the XP Pro, theres more than just those few networking settings that xp pro has that home doesnt, im telling u.

gn(3 am, school on sunday, we're jewish here :-P)

Linux is actually really user friendly these days. You really don't need to know that much about programming to use it, and it's a lot of fun to be able to play around with the inner workings of the OS. I'd be using it right now if it weren't for the lack of gaming support and the fact that it uses a low dpi.

Again komodo I have to correct you. There is no difference in stability between XP home and XP pro.

64 bit xp pro is free for download off of microsoft's website. it's a beta, but it apparebtly run s all right provided you can find 64 bit drivers for your hardware.

Is it good? Usually beta's aren't. They usually underperform, and of course you need 64 bit drivers wihich would probably underperform too. Another thing is that they can be unstable and crash more than released versions. Thats just the risk you take with beta's.

from what i've heard, the windows beta isn't bad, it's the drivers that suck... but it depends on the parts you have.... for example, ati drivers are pretty buggy on 64 bit from what i've heard, while nvidia's are ok.... which is no good for me lol. anyways, i just dl'd it, i'll install when i have time... and no, you couldn't magically dl it onto a blank hd, but you could dl it onto another computer, and burn it onto a disc (it comes as an iso image) and then boot from that disk.... good to go.

NOTE that if you do install a M$ beta OS, it will expire after a specified period of time, and you must wipe the drive and install something else, you will be locked out. It cannot be "upgraded" to a newer beta or a final OS.

That's what I said. The new beta qualifies as "something else".
