codec help

alright, heres my dilemma of the week. now, i dont know a lot about computers but i do know that i ****ed mine up. first, i installed a matrosvka codec pack to watch .mkv. however, this made it so my windows media player cant play avi files. thinking there might be codec conflicts, i uninstalled everything and tried to reinistall only the codecs i needed. this didnt work as even when i only installed divx i couldnt get my media player 10 to play avi files. after installing more packs as k-lite and others, i could play ogg and mkv files on bs. playing avi on bs says that my file may be corrupted but it will play on divx player. finally, i did gspot test and it says that i have all the necessary codecs but i cant render it with direct show.

any help would be appreciated

thanks
