Pressing the Power Button for 5 seconds ??

Does anyone know how to stop or alert me when someone presses the power button on a pc for 5 or more seconds ?? I have someone who constantly turns off my pc when i am not there to obtain a faster DSL connection.

Lock the room where the pc is at... if they really want to shut down your computer all they would have to do is pull the plug.

I thought DSL speeds remained the same regardless of the users around you. I thought it was cable modems that slowed with more use in the neighborhood?

Any shared connection goes through one line, so any computers using that one line only have that amount of bandwidth. However, that's only noticable when there is significant traffic going up and down from any one or many of the computers.

So, it's basically pointless for someone to shut off your computer to "gain more speed" if your computer isn't actually downloading/uploading anything.

If you're running XP, go to Control Panel>Display>Screen Saver tab>Power button>Advanced tab and set the "When I press the power button on my computer" to "Do nothing," Click OK.

I'd simply take a piece of low-tech equipment (like a baseball bat) to explain the facts to the jerk pulling this stunt. Only kidding, but I still think you'll have to convince him/her to stop playing games with your computer. Remind him/her of possible damage by doing this and how much a new pc costs. Lots of people only listen when you start mentioning money, especially when it's theirs
