What antivirus/firewall/security package are you using? It may be blocking them.

Check your Zone Alarm settings. As a test, disable it and see if the problem goes away.

I tried all the usual fixes for the Red X problem and finally found one that worked for me. It has not worked for everyone, though, since the keys referred to in the first set of steps are not present on every machine. I assume they got added when I installed something or other. However, if they are present, try these steps:

Open the Registry Editor and navigate to:
1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name -Space Handler
2. Go to File>Export and backup the two keys: http and ftp
3. Then delete both http and ftp
4. Close the Registry Editor

If those keys aren't present or deleting them didn't work, here's another fix that works for some people:

Quit Internet Explorer, if it is running.
1. Open regedit
2. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif
3. Double-click the Content Type value in the right pane of the Registry Editor.
4. In the Edit String dialog box, type image/gif in the Value Data box, and then click OK.
5. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
6. Double-click the Content Type value in the right pane of the Registry Editor.
7. In the Edit String dialog box, type image/jpg in the Value Data box, and then click OK.
8. Quit the Registry Editor.
9. Start Internet Explorer and open any Web page with a JPG or a GIF image.

*Usual Disclaimer: Editing the registry improperly can render your computer unbootable so follow the directions exactly and carefully.*
