Old Presario drivers
Hi all.
I remember someone on the forum a few months back was searching for drivers for the old Compaq Presario 2200 (the original desktop model, about 4 1/2 inches tall and 16 x 16). I am having the same problem. Anyone out there know where to find display adapter (and audio drivers) for WIN 98 SE that will work on this old P.O.S.? I don't know why she is so determined to keep this old thing running, but some customers are unwilling to upgrade. These machines originally ran WIN 95. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have already been to HP and driverguide.com with no luck in either place. This thing just WILL NOT accept a graphics adapter (at least, none that I've found yet). -Kev

Those are the ones I tried from driverguide.com with no luck getting it to accept the vga driver. The modem driver worked though.

OK, I loaded that driver (again) and i still get a screen coming up before boot that says the display adapter is not configured correctly. After going through all of the usual WIN 98 hardware wizard steps it still does not work. In device manager it says under the display adapter:
This device is functioning properly (code 23). The problem is with the main display adapter. Fix the main display adapter, and then this adapter will work. HUH???? GLC? STATICA? PANAMA? HAL9000? ANYBODY??? Help! -Kev |

well my knowledge is nowhere near that of those that you mentioned but while you are waiting for one of them to reply i would reccomend that you boot into safe mode and then check the video adapter in device manager. there is a possiblilty that there are more than one entries in the list. if there are more than one then delete the bad one.
is there a number on the chip itself which you could use to search for a driver? good luck, alan |

Yeah, I thought of that too. The graphics are on-board, no PCI cards. I'm not familiar enough with microelectronics to know which chip is which.

i went to the drivers site (hate the new format) and there was this clue about the chipset listed below the SP5015.exe driver:
"this is the driver for the presario2200, the display is made by cyrix media GX" now on the motherboard look for a chip with cyrix on it and see if there are any numbers there you could also search with. wish i could be more help. did another google and found this: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...er&btnG=Search the first one on the list looks promising: http://www.bios-drivers.com/drivers/130/130612.htm Last edited by tacoeater; 10-19-2004 at 01:30 AM. |

Already tried that driver by cyrix last week (and every other one that fit the description listed on driverguide.com).
That is where I always go first for drivers (after checking the manufacturers website). I format drives and load new systems every day. I wouldn't be here asking questions if I hadn't already used up all of the usual options. This one has me buggered. -Kev |

Wipe the hard drive, run the Compaq restore CD (putting 95 back on it) - then install 98 as an upgrade. With any luck, the drivers will carry over - or then again, they may not.
This won't make you or your customer feel any better, but I've worked on those MediaGX boxes before - probably the worst prebuilt computer I've ever seen. I'd rather work on an old Packard Bell. tacoeater - if I'm not mistaken, the graphics are integrated into the CPU on that thing. There is no separate video chip. Also, as I remember, installing a PCI video card is not possible, there's no room in it. Just thought of something - open device manager and look at display adapters. Are there 2 adapters in there, one flagged and one not flagged? If so, remove the one that is NOT flagged and reboot. (Reference - the ENUM thread in Tips and Tricks) |

OK. Thanks GLC. She (of course) has lost all disks that came with the PC and I believe I have already been through the adapters removal and re-boot process several times but I'll try one more time.
I agree, even the old PB's are easier than this thing. HMMMM.... I have an old Packard Bell sitting here all loaded. I could just offer it to her for less than the repair bill on the Compaq! But I still can't let this thing beat me!!!!! It's the principal of the thing now. -Kev |

OK, I am REALLY pissed at this thing now.
Last night after re-booting several times (removing graphics adapter, trying to install new ones, checking for conflicts in device manager etc, etc, etc...) I finally gave up, shut it down manually from the rocker switch on the back and disconnected everything. Today I plug it back in, boot the computer and it immediatly comes up with the Windows found new hardware wizard and installs the software for my Hitachi monitor (work monitor). I notice that it is NOT giving me the message that the display adapter is configured improperly. So I click on the desktop, go to properties, settings and there it is. Gives options all the way up to true color (only 16 bit) but it works. Upon playing a bit more with this thing I find that when you call for the system to restart, it doesn't actually go through the entire boot process over again. A re-boot must be accomplished by TURNING OFF THE ROCKER SWITCH ON THE BACK OF THE UNIT. Same thing happens when you hit the power switch on the front of the machine. It goes into some type of sleep mode but does not actually shut off. I never tried turning off the rocker switch in all the times I loaded graphics adapters for it previously. I probably had the right one the first time but when it didn't work, I switched to a different one and the WRONG adapter was installed when I finally turned off the machine for the night. The last adapter installed last night before I gave up on it was the original one from compaq. So, problem solved. Select shut down, allow Windows to through it's shut down procedure and then RESET THE ROCKER SWITCH before booting up the system again. Sorry to be so long-winded but I wanted to get all this down for anyone else who should ever have to play with one of these nightmares. -Kev (exhausted) |
