Application freezes when accessing big hard drive

Hello there,

I am experiencing an odd problem, and I don't have a clue anymore what could cause this, or how to solve.

The problem started when I got the WD1600JD, a 149 GB hard drive, and my first hard drive >128 GB.
I have two partitions on that hard drive:
System partition C:, 39 GB
Data partition D:, 110 GB

When I try to open a file from the data partition with almost any application, the application freezes, and I have to use Task Manager to close it.
But when I copy the file to partition C:, or the other hard drive (IBM 60GXP), it can be opened fine. Only partition D: is affected.
So far I had the problem in Premiere, ProCoder, TMPGEnc, Cuttermaran, PowerDVD, for example (although in PowerDVD, sometimes it works fine, sometimes not).
Haven't had the problem in Word, Paint, Photoshop, Audition, for example.

Problem exists since the beginning. I formatted the second partition from within Windows (disk management).

My OS is Windows XP SP2, and I have the newest BIOS on my board, which is the Asus P4P800. So, the 48 bit LBA is supported, and indeed the drive works fine otherwise.

The WD hard drive is connected to SATA_1, two opticals are on PATA_1 and the IBM is connected alone to PATA_2. Tried it also without the IBM, but it didn't help.

Does anyone have any ideas how to solve that problem ?

RJ

Have you run chkdsk /r on that partition?

Disable the indexing service - this is causing problems with SP2.

The indexing service was already disabled.

I ran chkdsk /r, and it just finished.
The result: "The file system has been checked. No problems were found."
