Google's HDD search tool
Is anyone using google's hard drive search thing?
How is it working, good? bad? Do you recommend it? Does this do what Windows XP's regular search does? Why would anybody need this? |

No, google desktop.
I wouldn't suggest using it. They've found two big gaping security holes in that software so far. If you want a search tool, try Locate32. http://www.totalshareware.com/ASP/de...plication=1329

I am using it. It works pretty good. The gaping security holes that FF is talking about really only affect the computer when you are on a public PC. The other concerning some obscure phishing attempt using javascript and some cleverly crafted URL's is fixed and was never a real problem IMO.
I am actually using two different ones for searching. Here is the lowdown on each. Lookout originally developed by another company and now owned by MS and offered as a free download. It is an Outlook plugin that will search all of your Outlook folders and alternatively your hard drive as well. It will also search through attached documents in emails. It gives lightning fast results and does a pretty good job of searching. You do have to manually keep indexing the files for it to work properly. Google Desktop is the other one that I use. It's main advantage to me is that it will search through your browser cache and/or emails and other documents. I use it mostly when I am looking for a website that I visited in the past that is in my browser cache. My evaluation is that Lookout is better for searching emails and office documents. The main reason is that the documents can be sorted better by the folder that they are in or by date whereas in GD the revelance of the documents is not as good and you can't really sort through them. I do like GD better for searching web pages and/or pdf's of recently visited sites.
