I tried several free and trial versions about 3 years ago and settled on Registry Healer. Paid $19.95 for the full version and love it. My weekly maintenance on all 6 home machines includes running RH. It prompts creation of a Windows XP Restore point before you run it to allow for backing up if an error occurs. I've used it on 98se, ME, 2000, XP Home and XP Pro and now with SP2 and never have had a problem.

i use jv16 powertools. i haven't tried many other registry cleaners, but this seems to get the job done. the newest version is only a 30 day trial, but i use the free old version of it. It also has some other useful tools to help clean up your computer.

I have Great Sucess with this one:

RegSeeker is a handy tool for managing several popular registry items and searching the registry by keyword. It offers quick access to Startup Entries, Uninstall Information, Color Schemes, History items (URLs, Recent Documents etc) and IE Favorites. The program also includes a registry cleaning feature that finds invalid and unused registry entries, allowing you to delete them. RegSeeker can automatically create a backup before deleting any registry entries. The program comes with an attractive, easy to use interface. Nevertheless it is not intended for complete beginners and you should feel comfortable working with the Windows registry before using it.
