'Program too big to fit in memory'

I've been having problems installing .EXEs that are at least 80MB in size. Every time I open them to install contents, a D0S window appears with the aforementioned message. I don't see how this is right seeing as I have 448MB RAM available (64 to video). Does anyone know how to fix this?

what program are you trying to install, the entire file does not go into the ram, only the install file.

XP Home, one program was the Half Life Full Client 1.1.1.0 patch (82MB) and the other was the Halo Trial Edition (131MB).

Athlon XP 2200+
512MB DDR333
40GB HD 2MB CACHE 5400 RPM (VRAM set to 2GB, 4GB max)

How much space is free on your operating system partition, and have you changed the default virtual memory (pagefile) settings?
