WMP 10 won't play .avi file video
I use to be able to play .avi video file and now all of as sudden wmp 10 would play any of the .avi file at all. where do i download an avi codec to correct this problem. so far i've tryed to uninstall wmp 10 did not work. restore windows to a later date, no cigar. reinstalling wmp 10 again, nope. what the hell is going on here. the last action i did before all of this mess happen was capturing video from my dv camcorder using vegas video 5. then i had to cancel it cause it was capturing the video in separate clip as detected. i wanted to capture the whole video without splitting. then boom thats when it happen when i was trying to play .avi file video that was capture before. no longer can be played in wmp 10. any help.

Check in the Tools/options area of WMP and check the File Types tab. Make sure .avi files is checked. It may have been assigned to a different program.

I'd bet the codec of the .avi doesn't agree with WMP10. Do you know what codec was used to create the .avi?

don't know what codec all i know when you capture a video from a dv camcorder its automatically an .avi file. like i said before it use to play all avi file video. it's not just this file that i've captured, that won't play. All of my avi video file won't play with wmp10.

The codec then is a AVI-DV codec which should play without issue in WMP. Either the file is somehow corrupt, or the association between the file type and WMP has been altered.
Do a google search for a program called GSPOT. It will give you basic information about your file. For one, it will tell you if the file length is correct for the bitrate information. It will also tell you the codec(s) on your system capable of playing the file. If you have GSPOT render the file, it will also show you the pathway to playing the file (from the splitting of the file to final rendering). Dave. |
