2 problems HELP!!
Ok, i have been messing with my computer lately (way too much actually), i download alot of programs to modify gta vice city for computer, one of those files had w32.jeffo torjan and messed up my computer i restored it with the Compaq feature in it. but now it is much much slower than before, i have 256 mb ram, 40 gb hdd, and a 2.4 celeron, with a video card that can be upgraded to 64 mb but by defult it is 8 mb (i am afraid of messing up this computer, my parents will kill me if i do) it seems that the problem is in the ram i downloaded rambooster v1.6 it boosts the ram for a while but then the computer slows down again, my virtual ram is min 372 and max is 744. i only have 2 process in my start up which i close after opening up the computer what should i do to get it back as fast as it was.
EDIT: oh yeah i forgot my os is xp home |

I would get rid of some of that software that you don't need.
then run spybot, adaware, and, avg to get rid of anyother garbage that may be in your system. then see how it runs. |

Ok, my problem was Zone alarm pro, i took it off and the computer got a bit faster, but still not as fast as it was before, do you think i should increase my virtual ram, because i have about 25-27 gb of hdd space i dont use may be i should increase my virtual min to 1 gb and max to 2 gb, what do you think guys? or would it mess up my whole computer and kill the drives?

no, leave the virtual memory alone,
on thing that will speed things up a lot is to add another stick of ram. 256 is the minium for xp it would run a lot better with 512 or more. |

I am sorry i was just wandering, does this increase in virtual memory have any side effect?, because it has been about half an hour, and i never saw my computer work this fast.

I'm curious if you learned anything from this?
It might be fast now, but if you didn't do what Bailey suggested, then you have not solved your problem completely, you only found a way around it. e.n.

well, i understand what you said el novato, so i decreased the virtual ram thing, and took off norton anti virus 2004 pro, man that thing hogs up all my memory, the computer is running just like before, i am going to increase the virtual ram to min 512 mb and max to 768 mb, just to get my computer an extra boost. thanks for your help.

You probably already know this, but...
Every month or so, run defrag. Since you've added and deleted so many files, your hard drive is fragmented. This will always speed things up a little. |
