Help Desk Software
Good Morning,
Before I ask my question, I need to check and see if it is OK to post questions here that will help me in my new job. I have just started work as the "IT Guy" at a small company. Is it OK to post questions here that would be work related? I have shared and recieved a LOT of good information on this forum that has added to my knowledge in building and repairing systems, now I am doing it "for a living". I have inventoried all of the systems in our company using just Excel. I have now been looking at software packages that are a good solution for a Help Desk. One of these is TRACK IT from Intuit. It has a great function that will load all of the information from a PC into the system and help the inventory and audit system very easy. I would first like to know if there is a program that you folks use that could be recomended. I would also like to know if there is a way I could do sort of the same thing only write my own in Access? Any help would be appriciated. There has to be a better way than what I am doing now. All of the software for the machines is in one location and my plan is to make my job easier if we were to be audited by a software vendor. I would also like to be able to troubleshoot a machine over the phone without asking the user what OS is on the machine, is it a notebook, etc. I should know all of that when the phone rings..... |

No problem with your questions being work related. Many of the more knowledgeable people on these boards are involved with computers as their profession/job. Sharing knowledge goes both ways. Guys like glc, DrGonzo, Hal9000, mbossman2, and Statica are IT Pro's that share their knowledge and pick up a few tidbits from others. That's what's great about PC Mech, we all help each other become better.

Track It is invaluable in a corporate setting. We use it at work and I know they don't plan on getting rid of it. That software does a lot.

If you want something simple - look at Belarc Advisor. The free standalone version has to be run locally on each machine. It's technically a license violation to use it commercially, but they do offer management packages for business use.

Thanks...
I have downloaded the demo of Track IT and am impressed. We are a small company and I am not sure the ROI would be what my manager is looking for. I may try to put something together in Access... |
