Angry Fire Moving My Documents--dont try it.

well, i just got a newsletter from pcmech saying how to move your my documents out of that whole documents and settings so i did. It didnt move it though, it made 2 seperate my documents, so i moved it back, in the process it stopped halfway through, so only half the stuff got transferred. I had to go back and copy all the stuff i missed, then deleted the old my documents. I lost the paper i was 80% finished and spent an hour working on, and numerous other documents. Now i still have 2 my documents folders, and since i have my downloads set to save to my documents some they go to the one ive been trying to get rid of. This whole things been a mess and i dont recommend trying it

You didn't hit cancel while the transfer was going, did you?

I've never seen a transfer stop dead without some sort of reason (drive is removed, user intervention, etc).

Nope. tryed recovering it using file scavenger, but when i installed file scavenger it installed the license agreement over almost all of the paper. As i looked down the list of recoverable almost all documents were in "good" condition, when i found my paper it was in "poor" condition.

Where is the original article from PC Mechanic? I just copied the "My Documents" folder and its subdirectories from the old PC to the new one. Using a wired network, and changing the name slightly on the new machine (so I could distinguish between the old and the new "My Documents"), it seemed to go OK.

I will definitely go back and check to be sure that everything transferred before I delete anything on the old PC.

Didn't see that tip before. I prefer a different way to move My Documents or My Pictures or My Music. Right Click the Start button and select Explore to open Windows Explorer. Find the My Documents folder you want to move. Right Click on the MD folder and drag it to the new partiton/hard drive/folder where you want the new location. Drop it there and an option window will open, select Move and you're done.
