IE polls floppy drive

I have a friend who's floppy drive will activate everytime he opens IE or a new browser window. Is there any idea of what causes this and how he can shut that off?

Do the usual and post his OS and system specs, and in the mean time get him to run some virus scans. Try "Housecall" from www.trendmicro.com it's a really good online virus scanner and it's free.
