Why Does a Computer Hangs?

Just for general knowledge I want to ask some questions.

Why does a computer hangs? Does the hanging of a computer depends on the OS we use or does it happen because of the Processor?

I would really appreciate if any one gives me a detail reasoning of why system hangs

Regards,

A hang or a crashis usually a symptom of a hardware issue, it could be because of bad RAM, overheating, bad component on the motherboard, incorrect BIOS setting, bad processor ... there are a thousand possibilities why it could happen. It is also not unlikely to get a BSOD (In windows a crash is termed as a blue screen of death or BSOD) from bad software or drivers.
There is no one word answer to the reason of a crash, the good news is that you can actually narrow down the cause of the crash with some sound reasoning and good diagnostic tools.

Thanks Statica for giving detail information, you said that their could be many possible reasons for this problem, overheating could also be a cause of system hang, does overheating happen because the fan of the processor doesnot work properly?

Fan not working properly, not enough fans, fans facing the wrong direction, fan placed improperly, fans and vents getting covered with dust - these are common issues. In the modern day version of the typical home computer, just one CPU fan is rather inadequate, especially if it gets hot, of course the number depends on how cool you can get your system to be.
