mikezel is right. You can install it in how many PCs you want but It's illegal to do so. When you update(Office Update) the same copy of Office 2002/XP,Microsoft can detect it by its ID ( I think there is a unique ID per software tha can be identifed through its Product ID).

There are different versions of software i think. In Os's, there is a detail that lists how many users can use/can be installed using the same copy of the same CD. I think that goes the same with Office 2002/XP.

From Office 2000 on the ELUA has stated that the Office Suite may be installed on one primary computer and a secondary computer (a laptop for example) as long as the computers are owned by the same individual and they are not running Office at the same time.

Office XP requires activation. You can activate it online the first time. When you install it on the second computer (which is legal as already discussed) you have to activate by phone and speak to a M$ rep - explain that it's your laptop - to get the activation code.

If you want M$ Office that can be installed on multiple computers, get Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition - it's $149 (less at Sam's Club - $126) and can be legally installed and activated online on 3 computers. It's the same as Office 2003 Standard - Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook. I haven't found a store yet that asks for proof of student or teacher eligibility. Requires Win2K or XP - will not install on 9x/ME.
