Outlook 2002 sending .dat file instead of attachment...

I have Outlook 2002 SP3 and whenever I send an attachment, especially Microsoft Word Docs or Excel spreadsheets, the receiver gets a .dat file instead of the appropriate file. This confuses me because if I use a web based e-mail, such as gmail, the document gets sent correctly. I do not know if there is a setting that I should be checking or changing. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

How are you attaching the doc? Are you starting a new message first or are you using Words send messgae function?

In Outlook, creating a new message and then attaching the appropriate file.

Winmail.dat attachments are included in received e-mail messages in Outlook 2002 or in Outlook 2003

Thanks Ezystvy for the insights. I have read over what was on the microsoft website and have made some changes. I will see if they work or not. But thanks again for your help.
