Outlook use of IMAP folders
Hey everyone;
I used various incarnations of Thunderbird for a while as my mail client, and really liked it. However, some stuff is coming up soon for which I am going to need a good integrated tasklist/calendar/communications suite, and since I am getting a pocketPC or a palm soon, Outlook seems to be pretty much the only choice. I do like its extensive options, but there is one thing I can't seem to figure out how to do. One thing I really liked about Tbird was that everything was by default, IMAP-folder-centric, but you could change that. For example, there were options so you could choose if your deleted emails were put in the local trash folder or the IMAP folder. Same for sent items, etc. I can't seem to find a way to do this with Outlook. The closest I can get is a rule that places every email I send into the remote Sent folder, but then when they get placed there, they are marked as unread, which is kind of stupid. I also wish there was a way to customize the delete action, so instead of just marking as deleted, it would move the deleted items to the remote trash folder and just purge them from the inbox or wherever they were sitting. Of course, there is a fairly simple solution to all of this: Use both Thunderbird AND Outlook. Is doing this long-term going to cause any problems? NW |

I use multiple IMAP accounts as well as a tasklist/calendar suite (using the P900, dont like pocketPC, Palm was too buggy); I do not use Outlook for the exact reason - the mail handling of IMAP servers is real counter productive; simply because the greatest feature (IMO) of using IMAP - remote folders is lost. So I just use OE for email w/IMAP and Outlook for the rest of it. There haven't been any issues. You would have the same good results with Tbird as well. I cannot use T'bird because of an unrelated issue aka inability to pair multiple SMTP servers and IMAP/POP3 accounts.
The only downside I did however faced with the setup was synching. The SE software wouldnt synch up the calendar, however I soon discovered that making Outlook the default email/messaging/calendar client - inspite of Outlook Express being my email client of choice - would make it synch properly. This may/not occur for you, depending on your device's communication suite. HTH |
