I have a couple of computers networked here at home...one being the P4 (WinXP Home Edition) I am using now, and I also have a P2 with Win98.
This second computer with Win98 I recently had to update my Norton Anti-Virus program, and instead of going with Norton Anti-Virus 2000, I upgraded it to the Norton 2005 (as well as a few add-ons that come with it) but find that when the process of the download takes place, it says I cannot do the upgrade without taking the "Old" version out. So, simply...you would think to go to the "Add/Remove" and go in and take out the old version...but it isn't in there to take out! Norton IS on the computer, but it doesn't show up in the "Add/Remove" for some reason, so I've been procrastinating, thinking I could figure this one out...but no luck! I've paid for the new Norton 2005, but am unable to use it, and my old version has ran out...so I'm obviously not able to update my "Liveupdate" any more, so I need to find the answer on how to delete my old version completely, so I can install this new version. I'm hoping someone has come across this before, and will have the answer on what I can do? Thanks very much in advance! Dale |

Norton is one of few applications that insist that you uninstall previous versions BEFORE upgrading.
You might read through their web site support section. They have an uninstall utility that might apply here.

If you have the cd for the old version you should be able to either uninstall from the cd or reinstall from the cd and then uninstall in the normal way, from windows add/remove programs.

Sorry, no CD, as I usually always just buy/download online, so I don't have the CD, and often after buying, I do the install, and then delete the file!
No luck on finding that info on the Norton "Support" pages?? Will have to try digging deeper I suppose. Thanks for the info, as I'll have to remember that getting the CD version might be a better option. Dale |

Are you sure there's no uninstall in the program menu?
By the way, putting Norton 2005 on an old machine with Win98 is going to bring it to its knees. You are MUCH better off putting AVG Free on it. |

Gosh...thanks very much, but I have already paid for it! Is it too intensive for my Celeron processor, or is it more of only having 128 MB of memory that would do this? Or being a P2 with a Celeron?
Perhaps in the meantime, I could add the AV free version, although it does have Norton 2002 on it now, but since it has ran out, there are no more Liveupdates available. I do plan on updating, or upgrading this computer in the new year, and would love to build my own, so perhaps I could swap this Norton 2005 over to that computer instead. I'm not sure if the actual "date" that the Liveupdates start on, start when I bought it, or start once it is installed? Thanks... Dale |

The last version of Norton that wasn't a bloated hog was 2003. I would not put 2005 on anything slower than a P3 with 256 ram and Win2K or XP.
The subscription period starts when it's installed and activated. |

Thanks! I have been contemplating either buying a cheap Dell (computer is only used for Internet access, using MS Word applications and playing MP3's 99% of the time anyway.
Or, perhaps building my own, as this is becoming more of a reality now that I've accessed this site, and realize that so much help is forthcoming. I appreciate very much the help and advice given, and just may try my hand at building a middle of the road computer. Thanks... Dale |

I always like to see people catching the "build-your-own-PC" bug. As you say, you have plenty of people who love to help, and it's not as hard as you might think. Only a little intimidating the first time you start building. You will love doing it... I'll pinky swear to that (I can't believe I just typed that) Stryker
