Ever since I installed Norton SystemWorks 2004 (which includes NAV) approximately nine months ago, it's had problems from the start, but now they've gotten so numerous I'm posting here to try and get some help in resolving them. I've searched Symantec's website and tried all their solutions as well as solutions from other webistes/forums including PCMech, but none help.
1. Norton Systemworks' Main Window Won't Open When I double-click on the desktop icon or any other icon to the main window of Norton SystemWorks, there's some activity for a little while, then it stops, the window never opens. This also applies for the Norton AntiVirus window, when I try to open Norton AntiVirus' main window, the computer shows some activity for a little while and then it stops and no window appears. Again, I've tried all of Norton's solutions as well as some others. 2. SpeedDisk Keeps Restarting This was not a problem that I had at the beginning, but showed up approx. three to four months ago. SpeedDisk continuously restarts and I can't get the defragmentation finished (within a reasonable length of time). Again, I've tried solutions like closing all applications via Ctrl-Alt-Dlt, disabling screensavers, etc. 3. LiveUpdate Won't Update Also a recent development, showed up approx. a month ago. When I run LiveUpdate, it says that it's trying to establish a connection with Norton's LiveUpdate, but the connection never comes. 4. AntiVirus Takes Eight Hours to Scan This has existed since the beginning. My HD is less than 9GB, so I don't know why it can take this long. Others tell me that it can scan their 40GB filled computers in less than 10 minutes, so I know this isn't normal. My computer specs. are: Windows 98 (First Edition) 450MHz AMD K-6-II Processor 192MB of RAM 9GB Harddrive I do have a 1500KBS DSL Connection Computer Approx. 5 Years Old as of Now Thanks for any Help in Advance -Bert |

98 and Norton 2004
Bert:
98 and Norton 2004 do not get along well. I have had many problems. When you run Liveupdate, there are error codes that are returned and these will help guide you. One includes downloading DCOM98 from Microsoft and installing it. Also, if you delete the update files in the liveupdate directory, that will help on Live update. The best is to follow up on the error codes and follow the instructions. On the issue of restarting, I have an idea that has helped me. Exit 98 to a dos prompt. Change directory to c:\windows\temp and erase all of the "tmp" files. Type "erase *.tmp" to get rid of these temporary files. Next, run scandisk and fix all problems there. On the virus scan, disable auto-protect before scanning. Re-enable it when you are through. These steps should help but I never got the two to work well together. 2003 norton works pretty well with 98. Good Luck |

Norton LiveUpdate doesn't give me any error messages. It just says: "Connecting to liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com...," and doesn't go any further than that. The status bar stays at the same place, and does not move. I've waited up to 15 minutes and it does not move.
