Trouble when using Powerpoint
I'm having trouble with my Powerpoint program, and thought perhaps someone here may know the answer?
If I am e-mailed a Powerpoint presentation, several months ago, I just clicked on the attachment, and up came the presentation. Now, I get an error message "This File does not have a program associated with it for performing this action"! BUT, what I CAN do, is just click the .pps file, save it to disk, go into Explorer and click the downloaded file, and it comes up instantly! Was the program installed wrong, and is there anything I can do to rectify this, as it is much easier to just watch the .pps file from my e-mail, then having to download each, then have to find it on my hard drive. Thanks... Dale |

Access the file and save it as a .ppt file (thisisthenameofthefile.ppt).

Interesting! Since it comes as a .pps file, why does it have to change to a .ppt file for Powerpoint viewer to open it?
Isn't a .pps file a Powerpoint file? A little confused. After looking at which programs open what...I see .pps Is Powerpoint slide show, and .ppt is Powerpoint Presentation! Shouldn't Powerpoint viewer work for both? If not, where does one get the software that would do both? Thx.. Dale Last edited by Powerstroke2000; 12-24-2004 at 01:14 PM. |

Just a suggestion - seems like I've never dealt with .pps files before and I use PowerPoint very often. I would do that as a trial and error fix and see if it works - the fact that the program is not being recognized by Windows as a default viewer probably means, among many other factors, that the extension is not being recognized. Take a copy of your PowerPoint file (for back up) and physically change the extension - see what happens.

A .pps file is just like powerpoint slideshow. It can be viewed merely with the free powerpoint viewer, and doesn't need the entire powerpoint program from the office suite installed.
In other words, it's a portable format.

Actually, I've never "used" either and thought that a pps was a Power Point presentation. I do, however, get a number of email attachments that come over as pps and have been using Quick View Plus to look at them, but sometimes it chokes on them. Don't know if the problem is the file or QVP, but now I have something to compare it to
Thanks again!

Question. I use the free Open Office suite which you can get online at www.openoffice.org
Is this designed for the non-Windows user? I use it because I haven't bought Office XP. It's compatible with the regular Powerpoint, Word, etc, but it's not it. Is it just the poor man's version which somebody created? My friend suggested it to me and it's worked like a charm ever since I downloaded it.

It's an open source version of Office - basically, it's like Linux except it's an office application. It's a free alternative to the paying MS version. I personally like MS'd product a lot better.

.pps files are "power point shows"
Bascially, they are a powerpoint which you can click on the icon and it goes straight to the presentation instead of the edit screen. My suggestion: Right click, open with..., choose program (in windows xp), check always open with this program, Powerpoint |

That's the catch, chapium: you have to have PowerPoint installed. I don't, and I know a lot of people who don't, which is why changing the extension to ppt and using IE to view the files comes in handy. Good tip if PowerPoint is installed, though.

Should the .pps or .ppt type of files not open with Powerpoint Viewer?
Not sure why I should have to change a .pps file e-mailed to me to a different filename (whateveritis.ppt) for it to open? I would like any .ppt or .pps file to just open within Outlook (e-mailed to me) by clicking on the file? Am I missing something here? Thanks... Dale |

It should, if you have Powerpoint Viewer installed.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Note PowerPoint Viewer 2003 registers with the .ppt, .pot, and .pps file extensions only if a version of PowerPoint is not installed on your computer. If registered, double-clicking on these file types will launch PowerPoint Viewer 2003. |
