Music Editing Software

This is a strange one...

Does anyone know of a program (im thinking Cool Edit Pro. Etc. but i havent tried, it's expensive) that will take an mp3, and split the tracks, ie: guitar, vocals, drums, bass? Presumably that wouldnt be too hard...

Regards,

Tom HB

Once a song is mixed down to stereo tracks, it's impossible to revert it back to seperate tracks without having the original master recording. There are tricks and audio plug-ins that can remove the vocals from a stereo recording (not well I'm affraid), but that's about the best you'd be able to accomplish.

What are some of those plugins that will remove the audio from a recording? I'm kinda curious now as this one of the things I've always wondered about myself. TIA.

They remove the vocals - not the audio!!!??!!

Anyway...to see how something like this works, download the Vocal Remover Winamp plug-in from AnalogX.com - it doesn't work miracles, but it's fun to play with.

I'd say the best unit on the market that removes vocals is the Thompson VE4. We use it on a rare occasion and have a decent amount of success with it.

Thanks Sonic, what was I thinking?

I really should quit having techno blasting in my ears when I'm trying to post questions, LOL.

Hi Sonic,

I played around with the Analog plugin for a little while, and yeah, it's not perfect by any means, but fun to play with it. Particularly in electronic/techno music where the voice may be morphed doesn't really work at all and has a tendency to cut out the wrong parts (i.e the bass instead of the voice....heheh).

Out of curiousity, how much does one of these Thompson units cost? Maybe I don't want to know...

How I fish I had an extra 15k sitting around so I could build myself an audio/video editing studio......
