Windows on its last leg?!?
I have a comp with windows XP home on it. For the last few monthes, the interent will always take 5 minutes to work on inital startup. Not on any of my other comps just this one.
So now, I install this new wirless hp printer, after it searches for the printer, internet stops for 5 min. After I finally get it installed, I restart and get some errors like Data Execution Prevention in Generic win 32 proscess, and svchost shuts down sometimes. I lost the registry and managed to restore it, re-install the printer, and now it seems after I print something, the comp decides to shut down, not stall or just power off. Like normally shut-down. So my question is does all this stem from the interent boot-up, did hp escalate it (There techs couldnt help...it was "Impossible" to restore the reg to them). HELP!!!!!!!! |

I think in this case, it would warrant reformatting your hardisk and do a clean install of XP. Be sure to do all the Windows update, "critical updates, including SP2. Reinstall your AV software and make sure virus definitions are current. Then follow all your peripheral installations, according to each manuf. instructions. You should have a sweetly humming mosheen by then!
P.S. Be sure to backup any critical data first, i.e. your "My Documents" contents, e-mail addressbook and your bookmarks. Cheers!

I'm inclined to agree with AlwaysUp. You're probably headed for a nuke and pave. Before you resort to that tho', save all your critical files and try running the System File Checker. Here's a link to tell you more about sfc/scannow and how to run it. Worth a shot.

Have you scanned for viruses and spyware?

Yeah Im pretty sure its clean of that stuff, the problems all seem to stem from svchost.exe. It has the "written" errors, generic processes problems stem from that, and I think it could cause the boot-up time. Will try the file checker utility thing.
