Dual boot system w/ two hard drives

I have asked about making a dual boot system before using only one hard drive and not reformatting. That looked to be a bit complicated. Now I have an extra hard drive and I want to know how to do it that way. I already have XP Home as my main OS. I want to install 98 on a different hard drive. How would I make it so I could choose which OS to use during startup? I want to play some older games that don't work in XP so it would be nice if I could make it work.

I've been trying to do that very thing over the last couple weeks (in what little spare time I have). I followed the directions in THIS thread by Hpro in Tips'n'Tricks, but I've had no joy. The directions are in a bit of broken English, but I'm pretty sure I followed them to a T. I messed a little bit with trying to configure the jumpers differently, but not too much. I've resigned myself to a complete reinstall of 98SE first, then XP over the top, as that's supposed to be much easier...

I'm following those instructions and installing 98 on the blank drive now. However, there seems to be a problem. It is randomly showing the following message:

Quote:
"You interrupted Setup while it was copying Windows files from a Setup (.CAB) file"

The following buttons are present:

OK
Cancel
Skip File
Details

Details says: "The following error occurred: 'Setup Interrupted' (error #65). Setup could not finish copying a file.
Source File: "*insert file name*"
Destination: "C:\Windows\system..."

I have been clicking OK. Is this a waste of time? Is it going to work after installing? It's going to take a very long time as it has been an hour and it's only at 27%.

UPDATE: It's been about 5 hours now and it has been sitting at 99% for 20 minutes. The CD-ROM clicks once in a while and it has made a couple very strange noises. It's a good thing I had nothing else to do today.

Try stopping it and starting again. Once you hit a read error, it either resumes after a few seconds, or just halts completely. Looks like it just halted. Try installing again.

I have a system set up like that, 98se on a 6Gb, 5400 rpm hdd and XP on SATA. Even have the same XP install imaged to another PATA. My mobo has a feature that allows me to select which drive I want to choose as the boot drive. Just press F8 during boot and instead of the SAFE mode options, I get drive boot options. This is with an Asus P4P800- Dx. Had the same capability with my former mobo, a P4PE/L with a different key. Think you can do the same thing with Boot Magic.

The key to getting each system stable was to do the os installs with no other drive connected. Do 98se by itself, do XP by itself. Make sure you have all the drivers installed on the 98. That can be tricky too!

Well I have been working on it for the past few hours. Not long after my previous update the installation finished and to my surprise it actually booted up. It's not perfect though. When it's booting it comes up with several errors that I will describe in detail later. I just finished installing the NIC and video drivers. I'll post back in a bit with a few more problems and an update.

I am aware that boot magic, with the help of partition magic makes it quite simple to dual boot.....from one drive. But I have strong feelings it would work exactly the same way with two. Shed some light on me... say on disk 1 (drive c you have windows xp, and you have hard disk 2 partioned and formated to drive D:. Will drive D: appear in "my computer" next to drive c:? Or will it float in the midst of nothingness unless booted on? My suggestion to you is to partition and format drive 2, then see if it appears when you boot from drive 1. If so, i'de purchase partition magic ($70), i'm pretty sure you could get that to work :-p

(well it looks like you go it to work ^_^, not my way though.)

Ok I haven't gotten to the dual boot part yet. I want to see if the games I will play even work before I go through that. I installed Need For Speed High Stakes. It "only" took an hour. Now I get the SAME ERROR ("AMF Platform 16") that I got in XP!!!! After further troubleshooting it apears that the GeForce 2 MX400 is "too new" for the game. I can't believe this. I have spent a total of 8 hours trying to get it to work only to find that it isn't possible. Well, I still have hope that it is. Maybe older drivers will work? Where can I find them? How do I remove the new ones?

]]I think you'de find it easier snatching an old pci graphics card from old machine and use a VGA selector box : (. Sounds harsh though huh? >.<

Quick guide (assuming XP is installed on primary boot device)

1 unplug xp disk
2 create primary+active FAT32 partition on disk2
3 install 98
4 re-connect XP disk

Should display both OS in startup menu.. if not:

1 load xp disc
2 recovery console
3 fixboot

Enjoy

Major, that's what Hpro's thread (linked to in previous post) describes, but I've had no luck at that method in several tries. Do you have a different link to (or can you offer) more specific instructions for getting the dual boot to be recognized that way?

Sorry, I was too lazy to read it and I have to go to school in a few minutes.
You could try this after installing 98

Go in XP recovery console:

Use these commands

Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
DEL C:\Boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild
Fixboot

Hope it works.

BTW.. the guide by Kov-Ice looks like I could have been the author.. very good..lol
I honestly did not read his guide before posting... just looks almost the same.

oh.. and don't forget to have both hd's connected before using the recovery console, cause all commands apply to the XP partition AND 98 partition.

The disclaimer in your sig makes me a bit nervous to try those commands... If no joy, will FIXBOOT D: recover my XP and allow it to work again? Thx.

Sorry for doubleposting.

Fixboot fixes your VBR (searches for OS then edits/updates it). Should fix your XP boot at all times.

depending on what driveletter you are using for XP it should fix it.

The disclaimer is just to make sure you won't sue me

You could always backup your drive.

It's a shame we live in such a litigious society... Outta curiousity, what do the other commands refer to?

bootCFG=redetect bootconfig\
del=delete
fixboot=rebuild vbr (kind of)

google for more info

Maybe I should do that. It's an older 20GB Maxtor 5400 RPM drive. However, I think the main problem is the CD-ROM. The good one I had in there broke and the only other one I had was an old Acer "40x". It has never audibly spun up and is running at around 1x. I think it is shot.

That wouldn't surprise me either - Acer opticals aren't the most reliable things out there.

HiHo, have you ventured any further with the dual boot? I just spent the last couple hours messing with my setup, and I've finally reached success. TweakPC had a very comprehensive guide HERE that I was able to work through. Lemme know if you are going to try it or have any trouble, and I can maybe fill in some blanks.

I haven't touched it since the last time I posted. I lost my motivation when I found that the games don't work anyway. Sorry.

Need for Speed High Stakes was the main one. I don't know why but I have just wanted to play that game lately. The only NFS games that work on my PC's is Porche Unleashed, which isn't that great, and NFS Hot Pursuit 2 which by the looks of the demo, isn't to hot either. Don't get me started on NFS Underground. I can't stand the rice burner stuff. I guess I'm out of luck unless I find an older PC. I used to play those games on a K6 233mhz with a 4MB 3dFX video card.
