Which XP pkg
I am about to order parts for a new AMD3400+ computer and one of the things I will need is the operating system
I am looking at various web sites such as NewEgg, Zip-Zoom, ect and see a variety available. I am gong to get Windows XP Home edition with sp/2 and I would like to know the difference between these packages. I know I don't want an "up-grade" version. Can anyone help? Part no. N09-00984 Windows XP home ed. OEM full product from $82.00 Part no. N09-01182 Windows XP home ed. 3 pac from $243.00 I see it in retail stores for $199.00 but a different part number. Which do I need to get?

Thanks Cricket,
I assume this will work as a clean install without having an earlier edition of Windows. Why is is so much less expensive? Does it have all the features? Thanks again |

The second one you listed comes with 3 licences (not sure how many CDs), so that you can legally install it on 3 PCs.
The $199 edition you mentioned is the Retail version, as opposed to the $82 OEM version, which comes with a fancy box, documentation, and official support from Microsoft. Generally, all you need is the OEM version. mike |

The second one is a 3 pack of them... three licenses, 3 CD's... three physical copies. The $82 one is an OEM version which you get support from the vendor in which you purchased it, the $199 you see in stores is Retail boxed which is supported directly from Microsoft.

Thanks guys, sounds like the "OEM" is a great way to save $100.00
One last question. With the OEM version, will I still be able to get future patches and upgrades? I would assume (hate to use that word) I could as it will still be a registered item. |

Of course - functionally it's no different than the retail version.
