Can't Uninstall Norton!!

Hi there guys, having a bit of an issue here with my brothers computer. I want to install norton 2005 but for some reason it will not let me uninstall norton 2004. When i goto add/remove programs and click on it, it says "detected newer version of norton, must be uninstalled before installing this version, setup will now quit" seems like there is another version of norton on there already.......not the case, i have searched everywhere for one and cannot find it. I also tried doing so in safe mode and it just tells me to go into normal mode. I have done a file search for anything with the word norton in it and came up with only one version. So what i did was just remove the norton file out of the programs list.....not a good idea because the computer would not start again, so i went into safe mode and restored the files. Also, i forgot to mention that when i go to install the new version it will not let me, it gives me the same message. Anyways, any help will be appreciated

Once you get it uninstalled, I wouldn't recommend you install Norton 2005 on that machine. It will bring it to its knees. Get a smaller footprint antivirus like AVG Free or Trend Micro.

I would have to agree with glc about not reinstalling....Nortons has given me a quite a few friends many problems.
