Audio Tape to PC software

I'm finally getting around to transferring some audio tapes from years gone by to my PC (digital format) and was wondering how to go about doing that. I'd like to be able to make each song a separate file - not one continuous file.

Thanks,

Audacity is the most often recommended free software. Personally, I purchased Audio Cleaning Lab 2004 a year or so ago and find it very good. Removes all the pops and hisses and provides great control over the recording. I made a cd for friend from a '50s jazz LP that had been played many times and the cd quality was pretty amazing. Here's an Audacity link.

i havnt tried either of the programs panama mentioend so i cant compre them, but right now im oding a project for my church, copying 30 years worth of sermons form cassettes to MP3s. Im using goldwave, which is available for free download, and it has worked excellently. It can be pretty advanced, or easy to use at the same time, and it gives you a wide array of options for your recording.

I just get a cord that plugs into the headphoens jack on the cassettep layer, and the line in jack on the computer, and open goldwave, and start recording, press play on the cassette player, and it records. at first you may have to do some adjustign with the line in volume and the cassettep layer volume to get it to sound right, once thats done its pretty smooth sailing.
