C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
That's where it is for office 2000 on an XP machine. I'm not sure about office XP.

You probably have to include hidden and system files in your search. By default, XP hides just about everything in users' profiles.

The folder application data is indeed a hidden/system folder and the path above does lead me to the normal.dot using XP home and Word 2003.
To enable see hidden files - in case you need to know - from windows exlporer --Tools - Folder Options -- View -- and about 10 lines down check "Show Hidden Fiels and Folders" radio button.

Don't you normally (pardon the pun) open word->Make the changes->Click File Save As->Change file type to Template and then select Normal.dot

EzyStvy - err yeah, we were all going down the how to find it via explorer path, you could just open Word and change the "files of type" in the open dialog box to 'document templates' and then naviagte to the normal.dot file.

You would still have to enable "View Hidden Files and Folders" in My Computer (Tools>Folder Options>View tab) to be able to navigate to it in Word.
One other way to do it from Word is to start a new document, go to File>Page Setup and make whaterver changes you want (before that, you can set the font and paragraph style you prefer). Then simply click the "Default" button at the bottom left of the dialog. Simply click OK after that when Word asks if you really want to do this and that it will affect all documents based on the Normal (Global) Template viz. Normal.dot. NPP
