well....i sat here the past few days scratching my head as to why my sub was bottoming out and my speakers distorting on hi's and lo's in the sound spectrum. i tried every conceivable thing...checking to make sure wires werent screwed up, played with EQ settings for what seemed like decades...and was almost ready to oder some new speakers when i thought "hey, i should ditch winamp and try WMP 10 again". boy am i glad i did. winamp was making my speakers sound like garbage. i thought for sure they were screwed.

it was version 5.03. i didnt start having the trouble up until a few days ago. i played with it inside and out and it still didnt sound right. WMP 10 sounds worlds better IMO. my surround sound is much more crisp and clear than it ever was with winamp.

I too have had problems listening to files using winamp. Can't for the life of me figure out why it would be, but oh well. What works, works.

ALL new media players are excessively bloated in my opinion. I feel that 2.x was the last clean Winamp, 6.4 was the last clean WMP, and I use Musicmatch 7.5. I'm not saying that Musicmatch is clean and not bloated, but the 6.x Plus version came with a burner I bought a few years ago so I installed it when I was having problems with Winamp and I liked it. 7.5 is as high as they will let me go with Plus without paying them some money. Right now I'm fighting Real - I have Basic 8 and it won't play a lot of the new Real sites, they insist I have to get 10.5 which I think is just awful. I also have Quicktime 6.3, which is treating me okay.
