I have an ageing PC running Windows 98. I have recently installed Norton SAystem Works 2005. When I try to use some of the utilities I get a pop-up telling me that Windows or another application is writing to my disk. I have done ctrl-alt-del to see what is open but can't see wht the problem is. (I'm not too PC savvy). Could there be a virus attached to one of the files in my startup? I have been running Norton anti-virus for the last 2 years.

NSW 2005 is the wrong application to use with an aging PC with Win98, it has a huge footprint and it's designed for newer PC's with WinXP. I'm guessing that this is happening when you try to use Disk Doctor or Speed Disk? That's typical with Win98 - the best way to maintain 98 is use the builtin Scandisk and Defrag in SAFE MODE. In order to re-establish these utilities, you have to uninstall the Norton utilities.

Diskeeper works find on Win98 boxes, and you don't have to do it in safe mode.
I have a little list of regular maintenance actions for my Win98 boxes (yes, I still have some of those! ):-- Delete all temp files (c:\windows\temp\*.tmp) -- Delete temporary internet files (c:\windows\temporary internet files\*.*) -- If you use I.E., click on Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files, select "delete all off-line content", click OK -- Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools, Disk Cleanup -- Download AdAware, check for updates, run it and remove whatever it finds -- Download Diskeeper and defrag -- Download, update and turn on SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. |
