How to handle *.eml and *.dat email files??
A friend of mine just sent me some emails he can't open (and I run into this from time to time, too). The emails, sent as attachments, are *.eml files I can't open in a decernable way. I "open" them, and they in turn have their own attachments with a *.dat extention.
I can't view them as email and I can't view any of the attached *.jpgs. I can view them in a viewer (Quick View Plus) and they are indeed emails as I see the headers, the text / body, and the mime section that denotes that a jpg(s) is attached and the following "goobly-gook." How do open and veiw these as regular emails and attachments? TIA

EML Attachments won't open or open the wrong application
How to configure Windows to open .eml extension attachments Click Start | Settings | Folder Options | File Types Scroll to Outlook Express Mail message and double click it. Double click 'open'. In "Application used to perform this action" enter the following: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /eml:%1 Click OK to close the window |

Thanks for the tip, glc. I just, moments ago, got an email from him and things are working just fine. On my own box, I used your tip to do the same but for the .dat extention. Seems that Nero's media player hyjacked that extension. I put it back to OE as you suggest for .eml files, and it works fine.
Thanks.

Yeah - my Nero media player hijacked a bunch of extensions. Doesn't bother me as I don't use Outhouse Express.

If you don't mind, glc, I have a different topic for you. I know you don't like Ghost, and I've checked out the program you use (forget it's name off the top of my head) and version 8 looks pretty good. I was wondering how it handles CD and DVD burners? It sounds like you still make an image to HD and then burn to disc, which is what I do with Ghost.
Also, does it show any problems with the amount of memory? In one of my boxes, I have to drop down to 1GB of RAM or the Ghost boot floppy won't boot. Finally, does it restore to a smaller drive like Ghost can? I experimented swapping in a 20GB drive and pulling out the 80GB with the Nero backup applet, but even though the total data size was about 5GB, Nero wouldn't restore to the HD since it was smaller than the original. I had to use Ghost to do the swap. TIA

I'm not using Drive Image much any more - my version is 5, which is getting pretty old, but it's pretty versatile - it has a subset of Partition Magic in it. I'm using Apricorn EZ-Gig II now, it came with my USB drive housing - and I've never made an image with it, only cloned drives. I'm just not a fan of images. I maintain a clone of my laptop drive and I use Backup Exec on my desktop.

Thanks, glc. (Actually, I was remembering wrong, as I was thinking it was Acronis True Image that you were using.)

Acronis True Image is pretty good but slower then ghost. I install Acronis True Image on family members computer becuase of ease of use but I perfer ghost because I dont have to install anything. Just boot from bootable cd...

Thanks for the tip, Doobie. I've been hearing scattered info on True Image, but most of it good. I have only minor issues with Ghost, so I think I can save myself $32 (Newegg price) and stick with it.
