Problems galore!

Well...went to use the computer today, and its been one thing after another!

Seems to be some sort of slow meltdown...as I don't even have a taskbar now.

When starting Windows XP, something it does, which it never has before, is it runs through a "Checkdisk"....ending with an error message, of which it seems to give up.....then slowly and eventually comes up to the main desktop screen, missing the bottom taskbar.
I can bring up IE, as it seems to be working somewhat, although it won't allow Graemlin's to be used, so something within Windows (scripting?) isn't working.
I ran Webroots Registry Mechanic, it found 103 issues, and I desposed of those, then I ran Webroots Spyware utility, and had everything cleaned up, but still no taskbar.

My Norton AntiVirus will not come up, and Liveupdate says to "remove & re-install Norton"??

I opened up my e-mail in Outlook, and e-mail downloaded from the server fine, but when I clicked on "reply", I got a "low on memory" message, and the computer speaker beeped at me each time I clicked on "reply"??
Heck, I've got over 700 MB of Ram...so what memory problem can there be?

I tried running Adobe Reader, and it goes through the process which it usually does prior to opening...and then just disappears! Since I have no taskbar, I can't minimize even this page, as it disappears as well, and I then have to re-type it all out again!

It was working perfectly yesterday, and now all of a sudden a whole host of trouble.

I usually have my old trusty Pentium II in the den as my backup, but no matter how many times I push the start button on the front of the computer, it won't come to life. Just not my day!

Since IE is still working (with flaws) hopefully I can check back here for some advice, as I just spent over $400.00 before X-mas to rid myself of a host of problems back then! The hard drive had to be wiped out, and I'd just finally got things working the way I liked them, and here we go again.

Thanks in advance for any help on these problems...

Dale

As both machines are not working, have you suffered some king of power surge or have you got an ongoing electrical problem in the house?? any other house hold electrical items acting up?

No power issues I know of! On the P2 it seems to be the button on the computer...so I'm wondering if the power supply on it has finally given up the ghost?

On this P4, I keep getting beeping from my PC speaker (never had this happen before) and nothing from the actual sound card now.

I wonder if running the Webroot Registry Sweep has cleaned out some files it shouldn't have?

The oddest thing in when minimizing even the browser Windows, they disappear into thin air, rather than dropping down as usual.

One thing I noticed too, even in using this site, I can't click on the graemlins, and have them work...although they always have in the past.

Since my Norton Anti Virus is down, I'm thinking I should just turn the thing off...as I certainly don't need issues of being on the net and having no protection.

Thanks for your input..

Can you try a system restore back before this problem started or maybe try a repair/install using your XP disk.

Update:

I did a Hotboot...basically to me was turning the computer off for a couple of hours...and then restarting it...it went through the Checkdsk session again at the beginning, and this time I got NO error message. It went through that process, and now things seem to be back to normal?

I have no idea why this happened, but thankfully I seem to be back on line again! Norton is working as it should etc.

Thanks for any advice, and now I would just like to know why a Hotboot would/could get things back on track?

Sounds like a overheating issue.
