Problem with AOL messenger

I have the latest version of AOL instant messenger and everything was fine until today. All of a sudden I can't send instant messages. I can open a new conversation window, but when I type, no text will appear in the box. I CAN receive instant messages, but I am unable to type a response. I've scanned for spyware and viruses, with no luck. Any idea what this is and how to fix it?

Is this problem present only when using AOL Instant Messanger?

It's only for AIM, and I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times. I even tried installing an earlier version, with no luck.

I didn't think of font color... Unfortunately that's not the problem. The cursor does not even move when I type. The easiest way to tell is that the "Send" option is unavailable until you type at least one character. The cursor does not move and Send remains grayed out. And it happens with any screen name logged onto with that computer.

Maybe try and use Trillian?

It doesn't fix the problems, but it if you jsut want to talk, it'll probibly work.

Try going back to an older version. http://www.oldversion.com Version 5.3 will work with no probs, if you want to go back that far.

The version you upgrated to may not be compatable with something or other.

Have you scanned for spyware? AOL IM is sometimes gets associated with some of the junk floating around.

Yes, I've scanned for spyware. Twice. I'm seriously running out of option that don't involve re-installing windows. Which seems to me to be excessive for one program.

Did you completely *remove* AIM before installing a different version?

If by remove you mean every trace, yes, I did. Every driver, every scrap of data involving that program was wiped out.

Can your computer even support the new aim? I would try getting an older version.

It's supported it up until now, why would it stop? The computer runs a Pentium III. My laptop specs are much worse then this computer and AIM works fine on that....
