Saving Internet Video Files
I'm trying to save a video from a website onto my computer. However, the video link is to a *.asx file, which opens up in Media Player but cannot be saved from there. Save target as... and Media Player only saves a shortcut to the file on the internet. The video is a clip of a news report from the site http://www.pulse24.com/News_Features...4-001/page.asp which a friend of mine was in and would like a copy of on a CD. Basically, is there any way to save the file, or is the file format one that cannot be saved on your own hard disk?

Usually, streamed files cannot be saved. Take a look at your browser cache to see if it was placed there.

Right click on the link, and you get the real url of the actual video.
http://www.pulse24.com/News_Features.../Video-5-2.asx Imput that link to a download manager such as NetTransport, and it will save to your computer. Open that file in NOTEPAD! There's the REAL link. Input that link into NetTransport, and you've got the video. (mms://livestream.chumtv.com/vodcp24/2005/jan5/jan2405-vcsilverman220.wmv) Yes, it's not a standard http or ftp link. NetTransport doesn't care what sort of link it is, it will download whatever you tell it. In this case, it's a wmv. ![]() Sometimes you can't right click. I usually hunt through the source of the page, find the link and then put it into NetTransport. 99% of the time, I can download. This method also works for those 1k .ram files which are actually just links. Open the 1k file in notepad, hilight the link, input into NetTransport, and voila, you actually get to download the file, not just listen/watch onscreen. |

Green Monkey, thanks for posting that question. I've been curious about this myself. My neighbor's son is in the military and was in a news video posted by that service's site. My neighbor wanted a copy for the rest of the family to see. I had no clue how to do it.
Reboot, thanks for the info. I will give this a try myself if the video is still available. |

Yes, that's the right link to the program (NetTransport).
Once that's installed, just click JOB, New Download, and paste in the URL of the video (the one above that starts with mms://livestream...) then click OK. |
