Good wave editor...free

Want to transfer some LPs to wav. files....any suggestions on a editor. I would like one that will take out-reduce the static noise and of course free.

Thanks

You can try audacity - its free, I don't know if it can remove static.

Goldwave will probably do it - but it is pay for software, although there is a trial.

The first thing is to make sure your records are free of dust and that the needle is clean. After everything is all set physically, you can then record and proceed to filter the recording.

Thanks for the info...

I'll try audacity...the website says it has a noise reduction feature.

Audacity is a great little program for freeware. And for some great advice on recording your LPs, check this site: http://www.delback.co.uk/lp-cdr.htm

Is Audacity purely a .wav editor, or can it convert to other file types as well (like .mp3 or .wma)?

Audacity can save as MP3. I don't know about WMA. Goldwave is good too and it's what I use. The trial version is fully featured and is unique in that it gives you 3000 clicks before it runs out. I've been using it quite a bit and I haven't run out of clicks yet.

Is Goldwave a better program overall than Audacity? How much is the license, btw?

I'm a little biased since I've been using it for a few years, and it can be used by intermediate users, as well as near professionals. It's a pretty full and solid app.

Last I saw on the license, it was $30. I just checked their website, and it looks like it's up to $55 CAD (about $45 USD).

Goldwave will do a lot more than Audacity. I has many tools in it. Half of which I don't even know what they are.

Although I'd agree it's solid, I would hesitate to say that anyone that is doing any type of professional work would use Goldwave. At best, it is for intermediate use - it does not have the resolution or features to compare to products in the professional arena.

I'm not knocking anything you might be doing, but if you had the chance to really work with a program like Sound Forge, WaveLab, ProTools and a few others, you'd fully understand what I am saying.

Dave.
