Right click = explorer crash

Whenever i right click on any icon, explorer stops responding. all the other programs will continue to work, but the start menu / desktop freezes.. it all works again if i CTRL+ALT+DEL and close explorer.exe and reload it, but i still can't right click. the same seems to occur when i try and move a file into another folder.

i've scanned with Ad-aware, spybot and NAV, all updated and it hasn't helped.. and its XP SP2. i've also tryed system restore but it doesn't seem to have made a difference either. and its on a laptop ie. no proper XP disc ie. no 'repair' install i dont think.

anyone know of a solution? (reformating is not currently on the table)

ok i ran sfc it didn't 'do' anything it just scanned and then went so i'm guessing that means it didn't find any problems.. so what ur suggesting i just try replacing explorer.exe?
it has some kind of xp cd but how far along the 'restore cd' route it goes i'm not sure.. anyway feel free to make any XP-cd related suggestions, and i'll see if they are possible or not

i have no EncodeDivXExt key @ [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\]

although the description fits pretty well (not just desktop icons though as this implies)

AvidFreeDV was installed (not by me) recently probably just before this problem occured, which i suppose would fit with some kind of codec thing.. i haven't just installed SP2 recently (or divx that recently)

how can i find out what version of divx i have? (remembering i can't R click) would uninstalling it help?

thanks shadowbreaker, filling me with confidence

I'd uninstall it till you get it sorted out. It could be any of the many context menu handlers you have. Do a Google on "right click explorer freeze" - there's a few more articles of interest, including one with a link to some software that makes it easy to selectively disable items.

problem solved.. 'eraser' was causing the problem; despite the fact i had disabled shell extensions in the programs preferances (!).. anyway i disabled its context menu handler thing and all is well again (to do with this atleast)
and that program was in the first link u posted glc..

ok well i spoke too soon somewhat.. right clicking is ok now* but if i press 'empty the recycle bin' or i try and copy or move a file, then it still crashes..
i can empty the RB by pressing delete still.

*actually, right clicking on folders is still a problem, just not other files

right click windows explorer crash

I have the same problems as many, however mine just started recently. I had divx installed and had no problem until several days ago. Until then divx was installed for almost a year without an upgrade. I read the internet, I tried to disable all shell extentions using shellview, no luck. I added a reg entry to disable divx no luck, actually uninstalling the divx eliminated the Dr. Watson postmortem error before the lockup. I tried to use norton goback which was god to me, however whatever the cupit was it screwed up my norton go back as well, so I could not revert back a couple of weeks ago. I did the norton antivirus scan and found some adware, removed them no luck, ran winroot spysweeper no instance found, no luck. My other two computers I have no problems yet, all works fine. This all happened when the last rounds of windows update installed. I had service pack 2 installed for several months. Well as you can see the problem still exists, I've sent numerous "report to microsoft" on this still no help from Microsoft. Guess I will have to pay $30.00 to have Microsoft troubleshoot this problem, think that is a monopoly even though I own shares of Microsoft. This problem also affected the following file explorer functions in these programs installed on my computer: Winzip, ACDSee, Internet download accelerator, download accelerator (DAP) explorer functions by right clicking the icons. If I use the "open command" on file or "My computer" I can brows folders and files, when I use "explorer" functions it locks up. If we get enough involved maybe someone can find a solution.

Update to the explore crash

More light and hope. I logged out of my profile and logged into my son's profile and right clicked explorer and all other programs as mentioned in my previous post and all works. So I have a "bad user profile" fix create a new user profile and transfer your settings and things should be back to normal.

Good Luck
