Talking Installation ?

Well I just found out how much I don't know!!! I downloaded a program and installed it 3Xs and I can't find it to open it or to use it. I went to the search tool in explorer and it states that its in program common files so when I go there it shows all these little files , I think they are what are called dlls, and I know I shouldn't open them. How do I pull an installed program out either into the menu or desktop so I can use it? And or how do I use the command line to pull it out and or use it. All help accepted and appreicated. Thank you Chiquito!!!

Send a message via AIM to RoyalT
.exe files are executable files and .dll files are driver files. "You will need to download both GTK+ Runtime Environment and The Gimp installers. Install GTK+ before installing The Gimp. " I read that from another site's faq's, not sure if I'm helping, but I just thought I'd throw my 2cents in

Talking Installation?

RoyalT,thank you for answering, the file is gtk+-2.4.14. When I double clicked the wizard came up and walked me thru the install process and when it was finished it said that it was finished and when I went to look on the desktop, nothing then I went to my Documents and only the file folder was there but no icon either on the desktop or in my documents or the start menu. So I conducted a search and it and the little doggie said it was in program/commonfiles. I couldn't find progran common files and I wouldn't know how to pull them out to make it useable anyway. So any help or opinion is welcome. Thank you Chiquito!!!

GTK+ is only the runtime environment (support files) - nothing to run after installation. Now you need to download and install Gimp itself.

http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

-----------------------------------------
GTK+ 2 for Windows (version 2.4.14)
3292 kB
GTK+ 2 runtime environment. This package is required by The Gimp 2.2.0

This is what you installed, right?
------------------------------------------------------------
The Gimp for Windows (version 2.2.3)
7069 kB
Gimp 2.2.3 for Windows.
Note: Gimp 2.2.3 available here requires GTK+ 2.4.14 runtime environment or newer, and will not work with older versions.

Now go get that and install it. You should also get the help and animation modules.

Question Installation!!!

GLC, Thanks for answering me, talking about runtime! I followed the link you left for me, which is where I was in the first place, and this is what I have on my desktop:2-gtk+-3.4.14,2-gtk+-2.4.14,2 gimp-gap.2, and 2gimp-help and all of them installed, but no Gimp!!!
This is why I buy C/Ds, 1 I don't know if its me ,2 I don't know if its the computer, all I know is I have this problem downloading. Do you think you could tell me if I'm doing something wrong? Any suggestions accepted!!! Chiquito!!!

The downloads are zip files. When you download them, you have to SAVE them - then you have to open them up and find the setup.exe file to install them. Go into your folder options, view tab, and UNcheck the box for hide extensions for known file types. If you have XP, just double click on a zip file, it will open in a new window.

gtk+-2.4.14-setup.zip - this is the runtime.
gimp-2.2.3-i586-setup.zip - this is the Gimp program.
gimp-help-2-0.6-setup.zip - this is the help.
gimp-gap-2.0.2-setup.zip - this is the animation package.

Question Installation!!!

GLC,thank you again but it still isn't clear to me, "open them up and find the setup.exe file to install them". Before I downloaded them a window comes up that asks you if you want to install the program or save to disk, and I always check save to disk. Then a folder appears on my desktop with the file name underneath. I then send it or a copy to my documents. Now this is the reason I have so many copies, in my documents is where I click install, but since this time after it was installed nothing showed up I also done a similar install on the desktop, and still nothing. If I done something out of order please tell me. Thank you Chiquito!!!

Don't send the folder ANYWHERE. Unhide your extensions as I already told you how - it has a .zip extension, right? Double click on it and it will open in a new window. Find the setup.exe file in that window and double click on it. Install the runtime FIRST, followed by Gimp itself, then the help and animation addons.

GLC, thank you it sort of worked and it sort of didn't. It is a zip file, what I went and done is I unziped all of them because they all come seperately. but now when I open it the install window comes and states " iniatialization of program files installing, querying for help files etc.,etc. I think I have to uninstall everything and start everything again. Anyway back to work and thank you Chiquito!!!!

You should have four zip files. Do them one at a time.

Wink Installation!!!

GLC,Thanks, I done that and when I click on the icon it still doesn't open like a regular application or like the Gimp used to on my other hard drive. But thats ok, I think that maybe if I redo it it might work better. I also done what you instructed about uncovering hidden files but I think my computer has a mind of its own and does it for my own good. Also everytime I have downloaded a program like the Gimp it shows up as an icon on my desk top but the Gimp showed up as a folder in fact all four parts showed up as a seperate folder, I don't know if that has anything to do with it but I thought I'd just mention it.

If its not too much trouble do you think that you could instruct me on how to go looking for these hidden file even if I have to use the command line even if I'm not very good at it? GLC, thank you very much for your help and attention Chiquito!!!

I just downloaded the runtime and the installation files. This is a no brainer.

Double click the runtime that you downloaded (gtk+-2.4.14-setup.zip), it will open in a new window with ONE file in there (gtk+-2.4.14-setup.exe) - double click on it and follow the install prompts. When done, double click on the program you downloaded (gimp-2.2.3-i586-setup.zip), and do the SAME THING. This WILL add a "Gimp" group in your start menu under All Programs (XP interface) or Programs (Classic interface). The install even asks you if you want a Quicklaunch and a Desktop shortcut. Go there and there will be a "Gimp 2" shortcut in it, click it, and Gimp will start. I did not download the help or the Animation installers, but I ASSUME they work the same way.

If you still have the extensions hidden, DONT SWEAT IT, it's not really necessary, you just won't see the .zip or .exe extension, but as you are dealing with only ONE file there's no ambiguity possible.

Wink Installation!!!

GLC,What can I say, you'er a genius!!!! Between you and SataraidO and Villarosa I bet you guys could repair anything. It worked better with these new instructions, and I followed them step by step. What amazes me is that this is the first time that I had to do an install in a certain order for it to work. Is this common or just this program, or did I miss something along the way. Thank you GLC!!! Chiquito!!!

Thumbs up Instalation?

GLC,I almost forgot how do I find hidden files or applications or programs in an OS? Otherwise, sometimes thereis that reference to "programs /commonfiles/gimp", but if I go looking for common files I can't find them. Should I ask you in this thread or should I start another thread? " Or should I give you a break and ask someone else"? Either way know that I'm gateful,Chiquito!!!

Folder options, view. Show hidden and system files and folders. While you are in there, unhide the extensions.

It's VERY common in the open source world to have to install libraries before you install a program, and to package an installer inside of a zip file. Get used to reading the instructions.

If you want to, but this can be dangerous if you try to mess with them.
