Re-Installation
Hello again,
I am trying to re-install Windows XP on a Compaq Presario computer. The owner had viruses on it and tried to do it themselves, but could not. When I received it there were no files on it. The hdd is a Maxtor 40gb. I put the XP CD in the CDROM and windows starts loading all the files and then I get a screen that says that if I received the message restart the computer and try it again, run scan disk for any errors or there is a virus on the disk. I restarted the computer and got the same message, the disk was thoroughly scaned using scan disk and a scaned for virused using AVG 7.0. I tried installing ME and the same thing happens. Anybody have any ideas? Thank you. |

Many times on those type PC's you have to use the system restore disk that came with it. I do not fully understand the process but I think it has something to do with a little seperate partition you'll see on that harddrive that contains the restore info so U can only restore the PC with an original compaq restore disk.

It has a boot sector virus, and you are going to have to zero fill the hard drive with the hard drive manufacturer's utility. Even after you do that, you still may have to use the Compaq restore CD or download a Softpaq to reset the diagnostic partition.

GLC,
I replaced the HDD with a new 80GB Western Digital. When I put the boot up disk in for Win. 98 and ME I get I/O error, please put system disk in and press enter. If I put Win. XP CD-ROM in, it begins the process, but then asks for XP with SP1 and press enter. As far as I know this CD does not have SP1. Also, the new HDD has not been partitioned or formatted because of the above error. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you. |

Either there is a virus in the BIOS or the BIOS is damaged on the motherbd.
PROM BIOSs can be infected with viri ; some are destrutive, some arent. If the BIOS is infected then you are in one h--l of a mess. You might have re-flash the BIOS with one from the manufacturer.
