Sound Editing

I was curious as to if anyone knew what a good user friendly but powerful music maker/sound editer would be. I have been wanting to make learn how to make some music/beats.. but I am not sure of a good program to look into.

Also, if anyone knew of any good places to find tutorials, or help on creating music/beats that would be appreaciated also.

Reason I ask is the fact that I have always wanted to learn how to create some beats of some sort, or to atleast mess around with such a program.. and the fact that yesterday I was in Borders and I was looking at magazines and came across a magazine that came with a program or something but it explained how to go about making such beats/music. I don't remember the name of the magazine, so I can't find anything online about it. Which is why I came here, wondering if anyone could help!

Thanks.

"Band in a Box" is pretty easy to use.

Fruity Loops is a very good program - Propellerhead's Reason would be the next step up - and it's a giant step.
