Blank CDs

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I bought a pack of blank CD-R's I wanted to save some fword documents and .jpeg files. The CD drive is not picking up these CDs.

Is there something I'm supposed to do to the CD-R's beforehand?

No. I guess these are your first CDs and you haven't burned CDs before, right ? So I guess you are doing something wrong the way you do it, so we'd need to know how you tried to burn to the CDs, in order to tell you what you're doing wrong.

What CD burner do you have ? If it's an older one you might need to flash the firmware.
What CD burning program do you use ? Or, did you try do drag&drop data to the CD ? For that, you need to format the CD (you need to have an appropriate program installed).

Oh, I thought burning CD was only for when you want to put music onto a CD-R. The burner I have is a LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-812S.

Is Nero a good program for burning?

No, burning CD means writing to a CD (technically, you write data (all kind of data) to a CD by burning it with a laser to the CD, therefore writing to CD or burning CD mean the same, whether it be music, video, or plain data)

That's quite a recent drive. It can even burn to DVDs, and LiteOn is good quality. So, you've got a good drive there.

Yes. Launch Nero, select CD-ROM (ISO). Activate the Joliet file system, and name the CD the way you like it. Then just drag&drop all data you wanna burn to the target window and burn.
If you wanna burn multiple times to the CD, until it's full, you need to use Multisession.

If it's the Nero that came with the drive, it's only Nero Express. Put the CD in, open Nero Express, choose Data, then Data Disk. Drag and drop files into the window.
