MSN Messenger Startup trouble
Let me start by mentioning that I have one computer with two users.
I am running xp pro. Both of us, (my wife and I) are classed as administrators. when I log on, neither MSN Messenger, or Yahoo Messenger starts up automatically, that is the way I want it. However I cannot stop either of these programs from starting up automatically when my wife logs on. I have unchecked the boxes on both msn and yahoo that say something like start this program when windows starts. I have gone to msconfig , startup, and unchecked them there, but each time I reboot or restart the computer, they are back there, and the programs start up again. Guess I should mention that when I go to msconfig or uncheck the boxes in those programs, that I am sure to be log in to my wifes account. Also I am not talking about windows messenger. What would cause those boxes in msconfig to get checked after I uncheck them. Any help is much appreciated. Jim |

Run messenger in both yours and your wifes account's and go into tools/options, make sure you uncheck the box that says "open with windows", some times msconfig is just not enough with this annoying program.
What version of messenger is causing the problem?

I have gone to the opion box in both programs, Msn Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger and unchecked start up when windows starts.
Version 6.2 MSN Messenger I went to msconfig, startup, and disabled all the programs, then rebooted, and there was a number of programs that the check mark where back. MSN and Yahoo where among them. Seems like something is protecting my start up programs. What would cause the check marks, to come back in msconfig, startup? Any help is appreciated. Jim |

well you can ditch windows messenger, use the add/remove windows components on the left-hand side of add/remove programs window. i got my windows messenger to settle down by not allowing it to run in the background and at windows startup.
yahoo messenger annoys me to the point where i just use the online browser version of it like aol quick buddy. i lost my aim/ym accounts so i don't need their im clients polluting my startup. |

If you are running XP check that the version of messenger that is starting with windows is not 4.7, this version is bundled with XP and is meant for use on your own LAN, the only way to stop it starting is to uninstall it. If this is the case let me know and I can give you a script that will completely uninstall 4.7 from your machine.

The very first thing I do upon reformatting any Windows based is remove MSN messenger.
There is a simple copy and paste code to remove it. Start Button Run Paste this code in and hit ok. rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %systemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove It works and is a final soluition to the MSN messenger problem. Copy it and paste it into the run box and hit ok, after it is done uninstalling MSN Messenger it will ask to reboot. You can reboot then or just wait till you restart the next time. When you do MSN will never bother you again. I then download and use Trillian for a IM program. |
