disappearing pictures in word

i often put pictures into word to print them so that i can size it to fit on one page, or just for other uses, school projects, etc.
but sometimes when i paste a picture in, all that shows up is white with the little boxes in the corners of the pic to resize. or ill put it in, and when u first paste into word it shows up with black boxes in the corners which allow you to make it bigger/smaller but not move it around in terms of position on the page (REALLY annoying), but u can change it to like "behind text" or things like that which allow you to move it around better, when i did this today it went to one of thses things where the picture is just WHITE and NOT showing up....how do u fix this??

Will it show up if you put it to print preview? When I am working on old, slow computers in the library I sometimes paste pictures into word, and there is not enough memory for them to display in the editing screen, but they are still there.

nope. only happens w/ certain pics, and doesnt show up in print preview, and when i tried to print the page (which appeared blank) it just didnt print anything, then when i got a diff picture to show up i could print that fine, about the same size pic. this isnt a slow comp so i doubt thats the problem, onboard gfx but that shouldnt affect something like this. im runnning a athlon XP 2500+ w/ 512 ram.

What file format are these pics in? You may be pasting in a format that Word can't accept with what graphics import filters you have installed.
