Switch from M$ windows xp pro to Mandrakelinux

I am thinking about switching to Mandrakelinux, Question is can I install Linux on the same hard drive as windows xp or do I have to reformat and partition and fresh install Mandrakelinux..
Thanks anyone using Linux or who just knows.
And also does one like Susie or Mandrake.

First off its called suse not susie

If you have never used linux before or your not good with linux yet, I would partition a few gigabytes on your hard drive for linux and keep windows on for now.

have used mandrake 9 for a short while. i used partition magic 8 to make an extra partition. mandrake installed easily onto the new partition without disturbing XP.
