Small Business Server 2003 - User Cal's
I have a question you experienced guys can probably answer. I am looking to set up a SBS2003 server for a small company in my area. They will have about 12-13 total users in office and remote that will need "access" to the server at any given time. Access is being considered a combination of exchange 2003 logins for mail retrieval/VPN connections/sharepoint services/remote web workplace, etc. I plan on only purhasing an additional 5 user CAL's to total 10 for the server. There may be the rare remote chance of the # of logins exceeding the # of user CAL's. What would happen if 12 people were attempting access to the server all at one time with only 10 user CAL's? Would the server deny the connection? Would there be adverse longterm affects to the server or it operation? Would the server shutdown or stop responding? I don't want to waste money on CAL's that would not be used, but there is an occasional remote chance the CAL's would be exceeded.
Thanks for any help! Jeremy P.S. I understand the legal implications of exceeding licences. I am just wondering what actual affects would be experienced. |

Frequently Asked Questions About Windows Small Business Server 2003 Licensing
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServ...ensingfaq.mspx Q. Are Windows Small Business Server 2003 CALs (whether per user or per device) by concurrent connections? A. No, CALs are per user or per device. They are not concurrent. Q. What is the difference between a device CAL and a user CAL? A. A device CAL permits one device (used by any user) to access the server software. A user CAL permits one user (using any device) to access the server software. Q. Does Windows Small Business Server 2003 provide a mechanism to track and display how many user or device CALs are in use? A. Windows Small Business Server 2003 does not provide a mechanism to track or display CALs. We strongly suggest, however, that you choose one CAL type (user/device) for your Windows Small Business Server 2003 installation. Windows Small Business Server 2003 will display only the number of CALs that have been activated. Thanks for the information. So, if I read it all correctly there will be no affect to the server or it's operations if they do happen to exceed the user CAL amount on their server.
Thanks. Jeremy |
