Is there a cheap Excel available?

Hi All,

I set up a system and put WordPerfect Office on it. "They," however, don't care to take the time to learn Quattro Pro and would like to get Excel. Are there cheap versions of Excel out there? or do you have to get Office or the like to get it?

TIA

Excel can be purchased seperate from the Office suite - I wouldn't call it 'cheap', but it is available.

Why not use the OpenOffice suite? It's spreadsheet is similar to Excel in many ways - more than Q-Pro is so there would be less of a learning curve.

I'll suggest your tip to them, SonicVanguard. (this is one of those support by email things...) Seems like they'll have either an expense or a learning curve. Thanks.

Hi andreanis,

Welcome to PC Mechanic !!

It would make sense to me if they learned what they have, as you say. I sent them an email about Excel prices, and once they see the expense, I'm sure they'll agree, too.

You can also get Staroffice 7.0 (based on openoffice) for free if you are a student, faculty, or educational institution.

Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition can be had for less than $150, it has Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook. It can legally be installed on 3 computers in the same household. With this being available, there is no reason in my mind to even look at WP Office any more unless you prefer WordPerfect to Word. If all you want is a suite that works, it's hard to beat OpenOffice (free).

Thanks. I'll pass on the Student Edition and Staroffice suggestions to them as well. I haven't heard from them lately, so maybe they went somewhere this weekend...

The biggest problem or nightmare that you will have to deal with OpenOffice is compatibility. It will open Excel files, works pretty much like Excel but it uses it's own proprietary file extensions which Excel won't open. Even the ones saved as Excel often have formatting problems. So if they plan to share these files with others then it can be a big problem.

One choice open office.org

it is not dificult and you can set in the preferences page to save in the ms compatible format as default and i never found any problem with that it usually works pretty well without conflics with ms office.

Good luck with the project

Haven't been around for a few days. I got an email from them last night and they decided to work with Quattro Pro.

Thanks again for all the ideas
