Pc Mech Popups

Suddenly Firefox is not blocking an advertisement popup when I visit the forums here, I'm just wondering what has changed? I did not change anything on my end..

I'm getting the same thing within the last couple of days. Hey, I just thought of something... maybe this is the reason for my Zone Alarm notification that has started in the last couple days too which seems to happen most often (if not every time) on PC Mech. (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=127855)

My Firefox blocks it when the page loads, but as soon as I click on a link it lets it through and opens the popup. Must be some new fancy kind of popup that is too intelligent for the blocker. I wonder if the new update for FF would fix this. I don't want to install it yet because there have been some folks here having trouble with it. (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=127877).

Hmm...strange. I'm running firefox 1.0 and no pop-ups here.

Are both of you folks all clean of spyware/adware and everything?

Does anyone else find it kind of ironic that people come here to ask us how to get rid of popups... and now they get one when they arrive?

I'm afraid the advertisers have devised a new kind of pop-under ad that affects every browser. They have been popping up now (no pun intended) for a few weeks. I'm sure the pop up blockers will be updated to defeat them soon. It's amazing how many sites have adopted these ad's in just the last few weeks.

They only pop-up I get here is for the pcmech newletter. The one thing I hate is on ever post certain words are highlighted green and underlined.. If you put your mouse over it you get some kind of description.. Who doesn't know what a motherboard is...

Actually I block those using Firefox. I don't see them anymore and haven't for quite a while. You just have to block the script that processes it (although I don't know if other browsers can do the same).

Very weird.

I tried over and over again, several visits today and no pop-ups. I hate it when something works and I don't know why...

If youre using firefox, and have adblock installed, just add a filter with this keyword: *.tribalfusion.* (including asterisks as wildcards) see if that works.

I do the same thing with the "smart text" (green underlined text with ad links) and it works perfectly. For some reason, I hadn't thought of it to block the popup. Guess I'll do the same with the popup script.
Thanks for the idea ComputerNut!

I have tried adblocker. It seems to work sometimes but not others, weird. I would actually like to hear from Moderators/Owners of this site as to why we now have to put up with even more annoying advertising on this site. I realize that the bills must be paid, but as Stryker said about the irony of coming here to find out how to get rid of popups and then you get popped by PCMech!
I also really dislike the annoying green underlines, they also slow down my already slow connection.

To block the green underline links. just add a filter in adblock with the following keyword: "*.vibrantmedia.*" (without the quotes)

Using Firefox and Adblock you can block out pretty much every ad, including popups, on these forums with the following:
http://*.vibrantmedia.*
http://*.tribalfusion.com/*

The only thing that shows up to me is the pricegrabber ad.
