98 SE hangs on shutdown
I'm working on an old 98 SE box for a customer. Running ASUS P-5 mainboard, AMD K-6 475 MHz processor. Got all the bugs out but one keeps resurfacing. This thing hangs on "windows is shutting down".
Have done a full re-install, no spyware/adware, no viruses. Just keeps hanging on shutdown. Any ideas out there? -Kev

Did a search of threads here and found much good info over in the 9x and ME threads.
Will report back later if the solution is found. -Kev |

98se shutdown issues were all fixed through a series of updates. Have you done all the Windows Updates that are available? That should solve it for you. If it doesn't, check out this link.

Yeah, that was one of the links I read while checking out the shutdown issues.
All Windows updates and other obvious set-up issues are always complete before I come here for help. After following all of the advice on Windows shut-down issues (flashing bios, making adjustments in set-up, etc etc) I discovered through pure trial and error that it only hangs on shutdown when connected to the internet through a Linksys wusb54g wireless network adapter. Unplugging the adapter from the USB port eliminates the shutdown issues. Anyone got any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance, -Kev Last edited by kev7555; 03-25-2005 at 12:04 AM. |

Un-installed and re-installed the adapter. No problems since. Must have been a driver conflict or something of that nature.

I don't want to sound pessimistic but this problem has a history of returning after a period of time. So, if it does, it isn't an item that should make you feel bad.
In your searching you probably ran across the desktop shortcut for shutdown. That generally is the solution of last resort. So keep it in mind. |

Actually, you're right, the problem did return shortly after I posted my solution last night, so I un-installed the wireless and went to a straight ethernet cable connection. The machine has been re-booted over thirty times today and the problem has not resurfaced.
Upon consulting with one of my tech friends, he told me he has seen multiple instances of this behavior with this adapter. Apparently Linksys now sells the same adapter and the information on the box no longer lists 98 SE or Me as supported. -Kev |
