Remote software

I am adding a computer, that will act like a server, to my network and I dont want to have to use a keyboard or a mouse with it. So I installed RealVNC to enter it from one of the desktops whenever I need to work on it. RealVNC had trouble connecting to a computer on same router. Does anyone know of a simple free program that I could use on a desktop to access server when necessary. Server is XP Pro and desktop is XP Home.

Thanks!

XP Pro has built in remote desktop software in it, you should be able to connect directly to it through the LAN. on your server, right click on My Computer, select properties, Then select remote. Then it will say something about enabling Remote Desktop. enable that. then on your client machine (or the system with XP home), goto start, programs, accessories, communications, Remote Desktop Connection. (oh yeah, before this you will need to know the LAN IP of your server, best way is to go to start > run, type CMD, then enter IPCONFIG on the dos screen. it will tell you the IP address). anwyay, one you know that enter that IP on the remote desktop connection. and see if it works.

HTH,

Thanks! I knew that but my recall stinks. I set the ip's statically so it should be a breeze. If anyone has any free software for non XP machines in future lay it on me please.

I've used realVNC and ultr@vnc. Both work fine (ultra is better, IMHO). You just have to remember to forward the correct ports in the router to the correct IP and register VNC as a service.

I use TightVNC whenever I can't use Remote Desktop -- it's free, too.
