trouble with dvd start

I've been having a problem trying to get my dvd player to start and play correctly. I have wmp, real player, and they hang , and won't start. Sometimes the dvd is dirty and when it is cleaned the player still won't play. very frustrating!!! Any thoughts on this? many thanks in advance.

Get a good player, with a good mpeg-2 decoder.
Real and WMP both suck at playing DVD's.
WinDVD (platinum or 6) or PowerDVD are recommended.
There are one or two free ones around, if you search.
There are also a couple of free mpeg-2 decoder codec's.
